388. Levi Sapp

Levi was the only Revolutionary War veteran from what is now Cook county Georgia. He and his wife Celia are buried in Woodlawn Cemetery (formerly Adel Town Cemetery) Adel, Cook county, Georgia. Their's are the oldest marked graves in that cemetery. There are other Sapps there but I am not sure of the relationship. John R. Taylor 1999

Levi married Celia (last name unknown) b.@1773, and died June 14, 1857 in Berrien Conty (now Cook) Georgia. Levi and Celia had the following children: Enoch Sapp b. 1790, William Sapp b. 1794, Jason Sapp b. 1800, Reuben Sapp b. 1803, Levi Sapp Jr. b. 1805, Nancy Elizabeth Sapp b. 1808, Mary Sapp b. 1810, Harmon Neal Sapp b. 1820. Levi is the only known RS buried in a marked grave in Cook County, GA. By an Act of June 9 1825 the 5th land lottery of 1827 was established. it is the records of that lottery that prove this patriot's military service. he drew land lot 46 in the 15th district, first section, of Lee County Ga. this land was awarded to him for his RS but he did not accetp. he was also award land in burke county grant of 1804, giving levi sapp 400 acres of pine land with rattlesnake branch flowing through it. in 1832 cherokee county gold lottery, levi sapp of tattnall county drew land lot #267 in the 19th district of the second section of cherokee county. in the 1834 tattnall county grant allowed levi an additional 400 acres of pine land on the waters of little reedy creek.

We have a famous RS Levi Sapp who is related to 90% of Ga. Sapps it seems. His pension states that he was born in VA. I've wondered if he might have been from the WVa panhandle. Time will tell. (submitted by Mitch; sapp@gru.net)

Levi Sapp was born in Virginia, January 6, 1761 and died august 30,1854, in Lowndge (now Cook) County, Georgia and buried in town cemetery,Adel, Georgia.
His wife Celia, born in 1773, Madan name Unkown, died June 14,1857 and is buried by her husband. Both graves are marked.

The few descendants living in Cook County knows nothing of the early life of their ancestor. That he was a Revolutionary soldier is known from the fact that he drew land as a Revolutionary soldier in 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. He drew lot # 46, 15 district of Lee County, He was living in Montgomery County (See page 115, Miss Huston Reprint of 1827, Georgia Land Lottery).

A complete number of children of Levi and Celia Sapp cannot be given. There were seven known children born to this couple.

First Georgia residence of Levi Sapp so far is in Emanuel County, thence the family appears to have moved to Montgomery County thence to Tattnell County. In 1833 the family moved to Thomas County. After three years on a farm in Thomas County they moved to Tefair County, thence in 1849 to Lowndge County, settling in the portion made into Berrien in 1856 and into Cook in 1918. Census References: 1830 Tattnall, 1840 Thomas, 1850 Lowandge.

Cecila, wife of Levy Sapp was a member of Pleasent Church in present Berrien County, having been received September 15, 1854 by letter from Sardir Church in Colquitt County. She died a member of Pleasant.

406. Thomas Lindsey

Thomas was a RW vet. He was killed by Indians and buried in Montgomery Co. Georgia. He moved to Montgomery Co. from NC in 1796. He was one of the first settlers. Although he has a headstone with his wife Hester Ann at her grave in Cook County, Georgia his remains were buried in Montgomery Co.

LINDSEY, Thomas 1750-1818 MONTGOMERY

THOMAS LINDSEY, a Revolutionary soldier of North Carolina, moved to Georgia about 1790 and became one of the first settlers of Montgomery County when it was created in 1796. He was married twice but the name of his first wife cannot be learned at this time. His second wife was Miss Hester Clark,
born 1774 in Georgia. She survived many years and died in 1876 at the age of 102 years and 10 months. She is well remembered by living grandchildren, Mrs. Arkansas Parrish and her sister, Mrs. Lou Goodman, both of Adel. The names of children by the first marriage are not known by descendants in Wiregrass Georgia; they lived in Montgomery and Laurens counties. The following
were by the second wife:

1. Robert b. 1794, m. (wife unknown). Left issue. Died about 1845.
2. John b. 1797, m. Mary McCranie, June 18, 1817.
3. Nancy b. 1799, m. John Ivey. Died 1881.
4. Zaney b. 1800, m. Joseph Jernigan, Feb. 16, 1917.
5. Benjamin b. 1802, m. Elender Shaw, dau. of Martin.
6. Ashley b. 1811, m. Martha Giddens.
7. Winnie b. 1815, m. Daniel McCranie, Jr. Died 1890.

The widow with the most of her children, all moved to Lowndes County about 1827, and located on the Lowndes Irwin County line in present Berrien County. After all her children were grown and married she lived with her youngest daughter, Mrs. McCranie, until her death.

Thomas Lindsey was also My GGG Grandfather through his son Benjamin Lindsey who married Eleanor Shaw. The marker at the "now called" Community Calvary Holiness Church in Adel Ga., has 1768 as his DOB, and 1816 as The year of his death. The marker also indicates, that he is buried in Montgomery County. Hester Ann Clark Lindsey "is" buried there. The marker is for both of them. I have no idea as to who put the marker there, or when it was placed there. It's a newer marker.

This site has an old frame church on the property, and was once called Old Wilkes Cemetary, and before that, was known as Bear Creek. The Children ar also listed on the back of the marker, they are Robert, Jackson, Nancy, Sarah, Benjamin, Jincy, Ashley, and Winnie. I would love to know what you find out in your search for Thomas Lindsey.

Who do you think his parents are? The James and Sarah Daniels Lindsey has been proven to be wrong.

Help!!!! Do you know the date of Thomas Lindsey's death. Was he killed at the Battle of Breakfast Branch in 1818 in Ga. There were only Five whites and Four Creeks killed. One of the Whites was Captian Benjamin Mitchell Griffin My 3rd G-Grand and Thomas is also a 3rd G-Grand. Thanks for your time and Effort.
